Pho Dac Biet is based on a true story of a Vietnamese-American girl who goes to Vietnam and tastes the best bowl of Pho she’s ever had, only to return to the United States to search frantically for a bowl that compares.
This film was done as my Senior Thesis at the University of the Arts. I wanted to make a film about my culture. At first, I planned to animate a Vietnamese folktale. But in the end, I decided to make a film about my own experiences in Vietnam. The Pho I had in Vietnam, truly could not be compared to those of Vietnamese restaurants in the US. I feel that I must add, that I do like the Pho in the US, but the Pho in Vietnam has a very special place in my heart. Hence, Pho Dac Biet, which translates to Pho Special, or Special Pho.
